As we leave the dog days of August behind us, I'm always reminded of the 3 a days during football camp that were hotter than a 3 dollar pistol.  What I remember most, though, was that those tough practices resulted in a close knit bond between all involved.  It was in those practices that we shared in the purpose to achieve a common cause to become a better team and win games.  While we weren't always the team with more points as the game concluded, it wasn't without a solid effort.

I understand that you all have busy lives, and it can be difficult to take time out of your day to focus on another part of your life.  Just as the 3 a days were not easy, so is scheduling the time to be involved in a project, helping someone in need, or even just going to a meeting.

September brings us the start of school, and we get to hear from our Youth Exchange student Hugo, as well as the Rotary Youth Leadership Awardees from this past summer.  The United Way has it's Kickoff campaign that Lucy Zander will get us excited about, and the District Governor will grace us with his insights about our District and the Adams County winery.

Also, our Rotary Golf tournament happens on the 21st.  It is our biggest Fundraiser of the year and I hope you can make it to watch my team take home the trophy this year!  (yes, Mike McKnight, we are coming for you this year...)

I would also like to give a shout out to our very own Linc Warrell.  His company, the Warrell Corp., was ranked #43 by the Central PA Business Journal's list of top companies in the Mid-State. Congrats Linc!

By the way, the one thing I really do like about August...The PEACHES!  Thanks John Peters!

Thanks again for all you do.

Service Above Self,

Jim DeGaetano, Jr.

Stories
The United States Treasury Department was established in 1789 on the 2nd, with V-J Day celebrated 156 years later. The Revolutionary War ended on the 3rd of September back in 1783.  Cal Ripken broke Lou Gehrig's record of consecutive games played on the 6th (1995). The 11th marks a day still fresh in our minds from 14 years ago, while the Star Spangled Banner poem was written in the 14th (1814).  Our US Constitution was signed on the 17th (1878).  That same day in 1970, Jimi Hendrix overdosed at the age of 27.  President Abe's Emancipation Proclamation was issued on the 22nd back in 1862 and the American pioneer Johnny Appleseed was born 1775 on the 24th.  West Side Story opened on Broadway on the 26th in '57.  Last but not least, the Warren Commission report on the assassination of President John F. Kennedy was released on Sept. 27, 1964.

Becoming a Federal Holiday

In 1894 there was a labor strike called the Pullman Strike. During this strike union workers in Illinois who worked for the railroads went on strike, shutting down much of the transportation in Chicago. The government brought army troops in to restore order. Unfortunately, there was violence and some workers were killed in the conflict. Not long after the strike ended, President Grover Cleveland tried to heal relations with labor groups. One thing he did was to quickly have Labor Day established as a national and federal holiday. As a result, on June 28, 1894 Labor Day became an official national holiday.
